Released in 1986, Tutu marked one of the boldest reinventions of Miles Davis' extraordinary career. Produced by bassist and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller, the album embraced contemporary electronic production, funk, pop and jazz fusion, pairing Davis' unmistakable trumpet with synthesizers, drum machines and richly layered arrangements. Dedicated to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the record reflected both the changing musical landscape of the 1980s and Davis' relentless drive to push jazz into new territory.
Driven by Marcus Miller's visionary production and Miles' expressive, lyrical playing, Tutu features some of the most memorable compositions of his later years, including the iconic title track, Tomaas and Portia. Winner of the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Tutu remains a landmark release that showcased Miles Davis' willingness to evolve while continuing to influence generations of musicians.
